Lovell Pushes to the Podium in Chicago

Chicagoland Speedway Lovell

Shaffer Motorsports Bitten by Woes at Baja 500

Baja 500

Ensenada, Baja California

Shaffer Motorsports was optimistic heading into the Baja 500. Their win in San Felipe had them just six points out of the championship points lead and both the Transfer Case Express, Torchmate racecar and the team were working better than ever. The race started off on a bad note when without warning, the gps acted up, it was unable to locate any satellites. It took until mile 89 for the gps to function and to add to the mix their race radio was not receiving. Unbeknownst to them at the time, the crew could hear them but they could not get a response.

Shaffer Motorsports Closing in on the Points Lead, Heads to the Baja 500

Shaffer Baja 500 2012

Oakland, CA
The Shaffer Motorsports team heads to Baja with momentum on their side. After their win at the San Felipe, 250 the Transfer Case Express Class 4 race car has pulled within 6 points of the lead in the season long points chase. The victory helped to bolster their confidence but the challenges they have overcome along the way has made it that much sweeter. San Felipe was a huge test for the team; they had to return to the states for an all-night transmission fix just before the race. Thanks to some incredible customer service from Weddle Industries they were more than ready when it was time to race and the results showed it.

Driving talent pays off on raceday but winning championships is a team affair, everyone has to dig deep when the going gets tough. To be a contender it takes a huge amount of planning, preparation and hard work. The prerunner suffered a broken rear axle housing which took the spool with it after San Felipe so the team has been putting in long hours getting both the prerunner and the Transfercase Express, Torchmate racer in top shape for 500 miles of Baja terrain.

The driving assignments have been split three ways. Mike Shaffer will drive with Bryan Crofts at the start, Shawn Twitchel will be doing the middle section with son Ian sitting next to him and Daniel Abereli and co-driver Bernie Strom will bring it home. By splitting up the course into three sections each driving pair will be able to learn the most intimate details of their section. If you are going to push it in the dust or darkness, you have to know what’s around the next bend. One thing is certain, the team will be going all out to back up their San Felipe win with another victory on this super challenging Baja 500 course.

May 22nd, 2012 – Corona, California

Rounds 5 and 6 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series have come and gone like the sun rises and drops over the Arizona desert. The heated opposition of racing in a close contact short course was many competitors undoing. Some failure came from the extreme conditions pushing driver and equipment to the limit while the major factor remaining in the way of successful and clean racing is the overly aggressive contact resulting in torn up vehicles.

They've been prepping the race car and pre-runner for the race and have run into a few small hurdles. They realized that the rear end in the pre-runner didn't sound all that great at the San Felipe 250. They ordered some new parts and tore it down. They were faced with the reality that the problems were much bigger than they thought! They found a spool broken in half due to an extremely busted rear axel housing. And then the racecar decided to join in on the chaos and left them chasing their tails with some serious engine management issues. They located a broken wire in the wiring harness that powered the injectors. But, now a week a late, they have been working some long hours to get back on schedule. They are trying to get everything finished up in time to leave this Saturday morning.

Once they get down to Mexico we will post up some pictures of pre-race festivities and pre-running!

Rusty Bray Starts Out the Season in 2nd Place

Rusty Bray Dayton

This past weekend was the start of the Werock East Pro Series season in Dayton, TN! This is a great venue because it typically attracts thousands of fans and this year is no different! We got to the event late on Friday and didn't have much time to prepare for the first obstacle. Once we arrived, we found out there was only three competitors in our class but all top notch and racing for the series! It started off a rough night with us all most pointing out on the first course and finishing in 3rd place for the night (not what we came to do!). The great thing about the evening was we had the opportunity to sign hundreds of autographs for the fans and market Torchmate racing. There was almost 2500 people watching on Friday night!

On day two, we come back focused and preapred! We started off watching the other two competitors DNF their first course and we cleaned the obstacle with low score of the day! This took us to first place immediately and gave us a comfortable lead thru most of the night. A bad judgement call on my part trying to miss all the cones on the last course, led the Torchmate racing team to a DNF and bumping us into 2nd place! During the shootout, our team gave it our all and finsihed more bonuses than any other at the event but we still came up a few points shy of the win! 2nd place finish to start the season off!

The fans showed up in force with another large crowd on Saturday night! There was activities for the kids and sessions for us to sign autographs all night long! We reached several hundred fans promoting the Torchmate Brand around the entire venue! We also did an interview and branding session for Yukon gear and axle, Radflo suspensions and Raceline wheels which will all help the Torchmate Racing team this season.

Gwen Garwood Finishes First at the WKA West Series

Gwen Garwood WKA West Series

Gwen and her Dad Josh headed west this weekend to Dixon CA for the opening round of the WKA West Series. On Saturday Gwen began the day about 1 second off of the pace but progressed to the top of  the charts after a clutch and motor change!

Rain Saturday night made the track wet for Sunday morning's warm up session . 5 year old Gwen and her Dad decided that it would be best for her to take it easy in the warm up and let the track dry out for qualifying . The plan was working great as most if the other competitors spun off the course . One driver spun off the course and rolled over in the wet and muddy grass bringing out the "Red Flag". As the drivers were slowing for the Red Flag , a driver spun across the straight and right in front of Gwen , causing Gwen to slam into him and jam her finger ending her warm up session. Next up was Gwen's 5 minute qualifying session. After the 5 minutes was up Gwen found herself in the off-pole position and missing the pole by 1/10th of a second.Gwen went on to win the 1st heat and finished 2nd in the 2nd heat .
Gwen started off-pole in the main event, she ran in the second position until lap 4 when Gwen decided to make her move on the outside going into turn 1 for the lead and never looked back. Gwen stretched her lead to about 2.5 seconds in the final 4 laps and going onto win her first ever Kid Kart race for herself and Torchmate CNC Cutting Systems. Gwen and her dad were both ecstatic about her first win!!! They both have worked very hard for it in last 2 years for this moment!!! Thanks to Torchmate CNC Cutting Systems , Kartel Motorsports, Magnum Racing Engines and and Trophy Air Systems!!!

Jesse Haines' Stampede Ultra4 Race Report

Jesse Haines Torchmate Stampede

Well it's taken me a few days to recover from this year's Torchmate Ultra 4 Stampede. The Stampede is probably the biggest rock sports event of the year, next to the King of the Hammers race. It's a race I take very seriously, and our team invested an incredible amount of effort into preparing for this race. A month before the race my co-driver Gabe Strouse and myself spent a weekend pre-running some of the trails that would be used for the race. After that the car was stripped down and thoroughly prepped. The motor and trans were both in rough shape so they were rebuilt along with quite a few other things. As usual, things took longer than we had planned. We stayed up all night the night before the pre-run just to get the car ready in time to get it out on the race course. We put 50 miles on the car, and only found a few minor issues. With a little work the car was ready for Friday morning's qualifying.

Scott Sroufe Shares His Last Few Weeks of Racing

Scott Sroufe

July 23rd
We headed to Dakota State Fair Speedway. I started 3rd in the heat race and was running third until I got moved out of the way in turn 3 with a couple of laps away and ended up with a 4th place finish. We made a couple of small changes to the car for the feature. They farmed the track right before we got onto the track, so the track was pretty hammer down fast. I started 6th in the feature and made short work moving into 2nd place. While running in second with about 5 laps remaining the guy running in 3rd was trying everything he could to get around me including bending in my rear bumper by about 4inches. I ended up loosing the fight with a 3rd place finish. The car was a little bit too tight to keep up with the leader.

Dawson Kirchner Takes 1st and 3rd at Lucas Oil Off Road Race

Dawson Kirchner

The first thing I can say about the weekend is that it was HOT. I was so thankful that we were doing night races. Practice and qualifying on Friday went well and I qualified third for Saturday nights race. For a nice change this weekend we didn't have to be at the track till 3pm for the drivers meeting rather than the usual 7am meetings. Due to the fact I actually drove home to Huntington Beach every night and slept in my own bed which was much appreciated.

Jesse Haines Recaps July's Races

Jesse Haines

On July 9th and 10th I was in Donner, CA for the 3rd event of the Cal-Neva Extreme rock crawling series. The Donner Ski Ranch has been one of my favorite venues since my first event there in 2008. For one reason or another, the fans that come to the events at the ranch always seem to remember me and the crazy lines that I’ve pulled off at previous events. It’s a good feeling knowing that I’m a “fan favorite” at the Donner events, and I’ve had great success there.

Nick Socha Pulls Out An Unexpected Win at Prairie City Gold Rush Series

2011 Nick Socha Prairie City

The weekend had it's ups and downs but it's one of those cases where you remind yourself to never give up no matter how bad things look. We practiced Saturday and finished the day looking like one of the fastest in the field, we were definitely confident going into race day. On race morning I was dialed and I put down my best qualifying session yet, I qualified 2nd of 14. It was a bittersweet feeling, you'd almost want to be 1st or 3rd and there is a reason why. My first heat ended in the first 50yrds., I was hung out to dry and put into the barriers. This was a bad feeling with how well we were running. With the result of the first heat being the start position for the main I was starting dead last!

An End To A Very Exciting Race For Torchmate Racing

Rusty Bray American Rocksports Challenge

This was an end to a very exciting race for the Torchmate racing #4498 car! We travelled to Tooele, Utah for the 4th race of the Ultra 4 series at Miller motorsports park not really knowing what to expect on a short course track with the type of cars we race. We showed up the first day to practice and after seeing the track, I knew right off there was no need in me evening practice with the 40" maxxis trepadors on the truck. we needed a leaner, smaller tire designed for the dirt that a short couse offers. Creighton King and the crew at Maxxis provided us with some special cut short course 35" tires for the buggy.

Rusty Bray Recaps This Weekend's WE Rock and TREC Races

Rusty Bray Ultra4

What a crazy weekend! We just got back from Utah last weekend at the Ultra4 race and only had four days to prep the car and build a new front wishbone for the suspension and try to resolve the cooling issues. Jonathan Dawes took the car to his shop and Jesse and I worked on both of them there just south of Indy.

Amsoil's Brad Lovell Punted From Contention at American Rocksports Challenge

american rocksports challenge

There is no doubt that the Inaugural American Rocksports Challenge will be the topic of conversation for a long time to come. Held at the Miller Motorsports Park near Salt Lake City UT, this was the first all out race to ever to combine a dirt short course with rockcrawling. As expected, it made for dramatic racing and carnage. Unfortunately, the AMSOIL / Lovell team did not escape without major damage. The story in driver Brad Lovell’s words.

“We have never worked so hard in a weekend to keep the truck going. About five laps into practice I discovered that I had no oil pressure. Thinking our weekend was likely done, I got a tow to the pits and we started thrashing. We replaced the oil pump and a variety of other parts and it finally came to life just in time to qualify. The fact that the engine was not destroyed is a testament to AMSOIL. With a strong engine we qualified 3rd and got some rest for race day."
