Bolt Together

 

The Torchmate 2 CNC Cutting System is offered in bolt together form as well as gantry kit form. Our bolt together option allows you to simply bolt the table together with the provided materials. No welding skills are required with the selection of the bolt together option. Our gantry kit option is further explained in the next section below entitled Gantry Kit.

 

Torchmate 2 extruded aluminumThe size of the Torchmate 2 ranges from 4'x4' to 6'x40'. The Torchmate 2 bolt together machine is constructed of heavy anodized extruded aluminum with precision hardened and ground x-axis rails. The x-axis is powered on both sides via a driveshaft.  The y-axis uses a precision industrial linear motion slide and cassette.  The machine rides on a three point support system comprised of eight 1" diameter needle bearing cam followers riding on four hardened and ground rails at right angles to each other. The load capacity is an amazing 4,518 pounds. Rack and pinion gear train, coupled with a timing belt and pulley reduction of 3.4:1 provides  quiet operation without the backlash and vulnerability to grit of ball-screw type drives.  As illustrated here the industrial linear motion assembly used on the Y axis is secured to the cross beam with hardened socket head cap screws spaced every 3 inches on the machine’s heavy extruded aluminum frame. It is possible for a man of average weight to stand on the roller cassette and have the machine carry him on both axes…we tried it!  Replaceable felt wipers are mounted on both ends of the roller cassette. The hardened and ground rails start out as 4140 pre-hardened (28-32 Rockwell C scale) alloy steel, oversize by 1/8" in both dimensions.  They are then blanchard ground to within .002" or less of absolute straightness in both dimensions.  Grinding the rails after they are hardened totally eliminates any distortion caused by the hardening process. The hardness level provides resistance to dings, but is not so extreme as to permit fracturing or chipping.  For comparison, 304 stainless steel has a hardness of approximately 24.5 RC.

 

 

Bolt Together Torchmate 2 CNC Cutting Systems

Torchmate 2 gantry units are constructed from heavy 3" square extruded aluminum.  All aluminum brackets are 1/4" thick, and steel brackets are 3/16" thick. The heavy extruded aluminum gantry unit is assembled by you according to provided instructions with the use of basic hand tools. Torchmate purchasers get an instruction CD which includes this SolidWorks 3-D model of the gantry carriage portion of the machine.  You can rotate the gantry and see it from every angle, and zoom in on any part of it to see the smallest detail.  This requires the SolidWorks Viewer, available free at http://www.solidworks.com/html/downloads.cfm.

 The Torchmate 2 is designed to permit you to do multiple operations on the same piece of material. With the addition of our optional Z (vertical) axis, it can be used as a CNC router, drill, or engraver.  Both the electronics and software are fully 3-D capable right out of the box. First the file containing potential holes to be drilled can be run followed by the file with the shapes to be plasma-cut.

 

For our Windows based systems, we have a proprietary machine interface available that will control virtually any plasma cutter trigger circuit. Oxy fuel and alternate gas cutting torches can be automated with Torchmate's gas cutting packages for cutting thick steel.  Metal art and metal sculpture dealers are a big part of our customer base, as are street rod chassis and frame builders, metal fabrication shops, ornamental and architectural iron shops, sheetmetal fabricators, and industrial arts teachers. Shapes that once took hours to cut by hand and grind smooth can be produced effortlessly and without the need for further processing.

Torchmate 2 DIY tableThe Torchmate 2 CNC Cutting System is offered in gantry kit form as well. The gantry kit is our economical option which requires welding skills. You assemble the table and rail system from locally purchased steel. The gantry unit can then be assembled with the use of basic hand tools.The size of the Torchmate 2 ranges from 4'x4' to 6'x40'. The Torchmate 2 CNC gantry kit was over a year in development. Improved over the Torchmate 1 in a variety of ways, it is comparable in construction and performance to industrial CNC plasma cutting machines costing $50,000 or more. Torchmate 2 gantry kit includes our 3 axis Windows-based electronics, driver software, necessary cabling, steel parts and brackets, hardware, hardened needle bearing guide rollers, rack and pinion gearing, and illustrated instruction manuals along with a digital 3d model of a completed machine that you can view from any angle, rotate, and zoom in to see the finest detail.  Motors are 380 oz. in., and use a 3.4:1 reduction via timing pulleys and belts.  The unit is powered on both sides via a 3/4" diameter drive shaft.  We supply the components to do this other than the 3/4" cold roll round bar, which you purchase locally.

For our Windows based systems, we have a proprietary machine interface available that will control virtually any plasma cutter trigger circuit. A solenoid valve can be purchased from welding supply houses that can automate cutting oxygen control in oxy-fuel work.

Some low-cost machines use a friction drive (small wheels to power the machine). Accumulations of plasma dust on the support surfaces can easily cause slippage.  Insist on a positive rack & pinion drive on both axes. The Torchmate 2 is driven on the Y axis and both sides of the X axis via a rugged rack & pinion drive train.  A 3.4:1 reduction via industrial timing pulleys and belts produces 914 oz. in. of effective torque on each axis.The Y axis (short axis) uses a precision industrial linear motion assembly. The rail assembly bolts to the gantry carriage with hardened socket head cap screws every three inches.  A person of average weight can actually stand on the roller cassette, and be carried on both axes by the machine.

CNC shape cutting removes stress from the operator that once was due to human errors and inaccuracy.
Since it is next to impossible for the computer to make the kinds of errors that are common in manual cutting, every piece in a production run is perfect--and effortless!  Operator fatigue is eliminated. There is no need for a highly skilled employee to operate the unit.  One of your people can create the shape on a computer in your office, and carry it out to another person in the shop on a floppy disk.
